news-today.world | WASHINGTON, DC: On May 17, the House Committee on Appropriations marked up the FY19 Commerce, Justice, and Science Appropriations bill. Congressman Andy Harris, M.D. (MD-01) authored, and the committee passed, an amendment ordering the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to study the effects of offshore wind projects on marine mammals and fish, as well as the need for any mitigation measures. Congressman Harris released the following statement after the markup:
“Commercial fishing and seafood processing are prominent industries in Maryland’s First District. The fishing community has expressed concern that U.S. Wind’s proposed offshore wind farm project will harm their fishing operations off the coast of Ocean City. My amendment orders the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to study the effects of offshore wind farm construction and operation on marine wildlife as well as the need for any mitigation measures. In addition to the several concerns already voiced by the local communities, the United States Coast Guard, and the National Park Service, it is imperative that we fully understand the negative effects on our fisheries that will be caused by this wind farm project.”
