news-today.world | Hi guys, I am working on my latest article but I just wanted to let you know that I have a really long trip in May coming up. I will be going to Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Macau and Taipei on this trip - the reason is that my partner's company is being invited to an event in Shenzhen and the hosts are willing to pay for our travel expenses. So we're talking free flights, hotels, meals - it's a very good deal! I have been helping out with his company as a financial consultant and given the number of Chinese people we are meeting on this trip, it makes complete sense to have a Mandarin-speaker on this trip. Besides, one of my best friends moved to Hong Kong about 18 months ago and I've yet to visit him, so I shall look forward to catching up with him and his family in Hong Kong. I wasn't expecting to go on this trip and was almost about to book another trip to the Netherlands in May but I've been there quite a few times already so the Netherlands can wait.
I have been doing my research into Shenzhen and I'm just quite nervous really - even though I have worked with PRCs before, the experience has been mixed at best. And of course, it is hugely beneficial for my partner's company to have a Mandarin speaker with them on this trip because you want to know what the hell the other parties are saying amongst themselves: I speak Mandarin fluently and am competent in Cantonese and Hokkien, so there's really little they can get away with. Actually if I may be honest, my spoken Mandarin isn't bad - my current company has clients in Taiwan and I'm dealing with them entirely in Mandarin on the phone, though I do use Google translate when emailing them. I only pretend I don't speak Chinese at all when I am with my family, just to annoy my father who is a Chinese teacher. I suppose he used to think that if he couldn't even teach his own child how to speak Chinese, then he would have failed as a Chinese teacher and I just love annoying him - how passive-aggressive of me, but I digress. I'm quite nervous of course about being thrown into a Chinese work environment as this happens only every few years and the last time I was in a Mandarin-majority work environment was in 2015 and even then, everything was an uphill struggle. I know what I want to say in English but having to get it out in Mandarin is always a struggle when there's technical jargon involved.

And yes, I did think about popping down to Singapore from Taiwan or Hong Kong after I was done with this trip, but I had decided against it. The key reason is that I was only just in Singapore last September, so it hasn't been that long since I was in Singapore. And if I was to turn this into a holiday after the work was done, well I could simply extend my stay in Taiwan or even go onto Japan and South Korea. I spoke to a good friend back in Singapore about it and he was like, "what on earth would you wanna come back to Singapore for again? Go explore somewhere like Seoul and broaden your horizons, go lose yourself in the amazing world of Korean culture. What's the point of coming back to Singapore just to argue with your family again?" Mind you, one of the reasons I could go to Singapore would be to spend more quality time with my nephew, to take him somewhere for an adventure - but the timing is just all wrong as he would be in the midst of his mid-year exams in May so I probably wouldn't even see much of him. Besides, I do have to work you know and 17 days away from work is a long time indeed. So with all that in mind, I've decided that giving Singapore a miss this time round even though I would be in a 4 hour flight away. So let's not open another can of worms - I just don't have the time.
I will be spending a total of five days in Shenzhen, five days in Hong Kong (& Macau) and five days in Taipei but when you add all the flying from London, I'm actually away for a full 17 days. That's an awfully long time. I will have virtually no spare time at all in Shenzehn given that I will be at an event all that time but otherwise, I will have plenty of time to spare in Hong Kong and Taipei. I am looking forward to the experience whilst being a bit apprehensive about what is expected of me, but hey, I will welcome any tips you guys may have for me. I've never been to Shenzhen, Macau or Taiwan and have only visited Hong Kong as a child many years ago in the 1985. This should be interesting. Many thanks for reading!
