news-today.world | Merhaba and sawardee karp, hi guys, I've been away in Finland and Sweden (you can see my photos and videos from this trip on Instagram), so I apologize for the very late and relatively brief recap of the last double episode. I know it is less than a day before the grand finale is aired in the US. But let's get started with the statistics as always after 10 legs.
Team Extreme 2.5
Team IndyCar 2.8
Team BB 3.8
Team Yale 3.9 (saved by NEL in Chiang Mai)
Team Ocean Rescue 4.2 (eliminated in Manama)
About Lucas losing his passport
On one hand, you have got to feel for the guy. Team OC had been doing well till he lost his passport! He must be so consumed by guilt for having let Brittany down like that. On the other hand, having just taken four flights in the last week, I am left wondering how on earth do you leave your passport on the plane? It is not rocket science. When I took my flights, I showed my passport to the personnel at the boarding gate to show that it matches the name on my ticket. After that, it goes into a pocket and it stays there. I have no reason to take it out any further until I arrive at the next country and I arrive at passport control. Between showing your passport at the boarding gate and settling down in your seat on the plane, there's usually a short distance to walk - sometimes you may even need to get on a bus if your plane is parked far from the boarding gate and when you finally get on the plane, there's a lot of messing around with putting away your hand luggage. You should have your boarding pass ready when you get on the plane as the staff usually check that you've gotten on the right flight, but they never check your passport at that stage as the ground staff at the airport terminal would have already done that already. In short, Lucas had no reason to have his passport out in his hands the moment he left the terminal in Addis Ababa airport, he should have put it away. Why his passport was actually out in the plane is puzzling to say the least. In any case, I always check and double check that I have everything before I get off the plane - that's just what normal people do when they get off a train, bus or plane, you don't want to leave anything behind.
But he's human, you may point out, we all make mistakes, right? And as I pointed out in last week's post, quite a few people on TAR have lost their passports before. I must say, hats off to Brittany for keeping her cool and not getting angry with Lucas (pineapple!) for that stupid mistake. I remember how Becca of team fun totally lost her temper with Floyd when he lost his passport in the last season and I was expecting Brittany to blow up. But instead, she was totally supportive and calm through their time stuck in Dubai. I am still very puzzled about something that wasn't shown on the programme: the teams were in the transit area in Dubai airport, I have flown through Dubai many times and know that airport well. Lucas had supposedly left his passport on the plane (or worse, dropped it in Addis Ababa). They had not cleared passport control at Dubai airport and I thought he would not have been allowed into the United Arab Emirates without a passport. I thought some official from the American consulate would have to come down to the airport and sort things out for Lucas in the transit area - but somehow, without a passport, Lucas was allowed into Dubai. Having passed through the passport control at Dubai airport many times before, I find it totally implausible that anyone could just breeze through and say, "Sorry, I don't have my passport with me, but hey I'm American and I'm on the Amazing Race, it is a very popular TV programme. Surely you have heard about it?" So how on earth did Lucas get through passport control?
Should team Ocean Rescue have been saved?
I think that there would have been a good argument for making the leg in Manama a NEL. Firstly, in eliminating team OC in Manama, it was a foregone conclusion that no matter how far team Yale fell behind in Chiang Mai, they would have been alright because you would not eliminate the last team and go into the penultimate leg with only three teams. We know that there are usually three (there was only that one time when four teams raced to the finish line, leading to the sweet scientists winning season 25 - but we know that they will probably eliminate one team in leg 11 to create the tension surrounding which three teams will get to race to the finish line and which team will be the last to be eliminated. I would also say that whilst the way Lucas lost his passport leaves me speechless, the fans hate to see a team eliminated over something like that. Some would argue that they deserve a second chance and we fans prefer to see a team eliminated over something related directly to the tasks, rather than losing a passport. It really meant that the four teams who made it to Manama could do whatever they want and not face elimination, because team OC were stuck in another country. However, given how long it takes for the production to set up all the various tasks that the teams will have to do when they arrive in a new country, it is very hard for them to change their plans when something like that happens. Personally, I do believe that Lucas should be punished for being so careless - heck, you're a grown man, take responsibility for your passport. I was at the airport yesterday and I have seen many children behaving more responsibly!
There was an unaired task in Bahrain!
The drama about Lucas losing his passport took up so much air time in that episode that there was an unaired task. According to the page on Wikipedia, "in an unaired task at Bahrain Bay, team members were asked three questions and without consulting each other had to answer to whom the question applied. The three questions were: (1) Who has carried the most weight in the race?; (2) Who is the first to quit on a task? (3) Who knows their partner best? Team members had to answer these questions with one member standing on a plank on a boat floating on the sea. If the answers did not match, then the person on the plank had to dive into the bay and teams would start over. When teams matched all three answers, they would receive their next clue." It actually sounds like quite an interesting and fun task, but given how there is only a limited amount of time in each episode, the editors decided that they needed to dedicate far more time to the Lucas passport drama. But wait, they spent some time showing Jessica going back to Eastgate mall in Harare to buy some new shoes at the beginning of the episode - now that wasn't interesting at all, because it was not done whilst racing and she was very relaxed. Why did they bother showing her shoe shopping excursion to the mall and cut that Bahrain Bay unaired task? Who gives a shit about Jessica buying new shoes at the mall in Harare? I know which I would much rather see - thus some of the bizarre decisions made by the editors in post-production have left me quite confused, surely they should at least put those unaired tasks on their CBS website, having already filmed those scenes?

How hard is it to navigate your way around Bahrain?
The programme actually made navigating around Bahrain look extremely complicated but I double checked the map for some of the locations the teams had to visit: the shipyard and the sweet shop were both relatively close to the airport, but the pottery factory was about 19 km away from the airport and the capital Manama in a town called A'Ali and the camel milking task took place in Zallaq, which was 33 km from the airport. The pit stop was at the Tree of Life, which is all the way in the southern half of Bahrain, 40 km from the airport. All signs in Bahrain are in two languages: Arabic and English. What is clear is that this leg was designed to take the racers around Bahrain rather than just around the capital city of Manama. It seemed that the teams mostly got lost once they left the Manama city area - perhaps they didn't realize just how far away it was or that the address they were looking for wasn't even in Manama itself. I've lived in London for 21 years and if you show me an address in London, I'd probably can give you decent directions to get there or at least very close to there. But if you were to show me an address of say a town that's 30 to 40 km from London like St Albans or Slough, I wouldn't be able to help you off the top of my head, I'd have to take out my phone and look it up on Google. It is somewhat unreasonable to expect the locals in Manama to be able you with directions for a destination that far away.
Having lived and worked in Dubai, I know exactly who to ask for directions in a place like that. Most of the time, the racers were totally barking up the wrong tree, asking the wrong kinds of people for directions. Team Indycar asked an old man who barely spoke English and all he could say was, "very far, very far". Firstly, a lot of the people in Bahrain are not even locals - this is an extremely rich country, thanks to their oil wealth and they have a lot of migrant labour from poorer Asian countries like Nepal, India and Pakistan who come to do the hard work in the unforgiving desert heat that the locals don't want to do. There are a huge number of such migrant labourers in places in the oil-rich Arab countries, but they tend to be lowly educated labourers working in construction. Always make sure you're asking a local Bahrain Arab and never a foreign migrant worker for directions. Secondly, always ask someone who looks like they are a well-educated professional and they will probably speak English flawlessly - so running into somewhere like a bank, a posh office, a luxury boutique or high-class hotel would probably work but stopping a random stranger in the street is not a good idea, especially if they are over the age of 40. Sorry if that sounds shallow and ageist, but you really need to find a tech-savvy, English speaking local who will help you and that means judging people by their appearances. Do Americans like team Indycar just assume that everyone around the world speaks English flawlessly even in places like Bahrain?
We have to talk about Jessica.
Boy she is both nasty and stupid. She was celebrating when Lucas had lost his passport, claiming that it was karma for the U-turn in Zimbabwe. That's both dumb and evil - firstly, the U-turn is part of TAR, it is nothing personal, it is just part of the game and if another team chooses to use it, then it is fair play. They were not afraid to use it before in leg 6 in Prague when they U-turned team Well-Strung, so she was quite happy to U-turn another team but not happy when she got U-turned? Yeah right, what a bitch. She did practically nothing in the Dhow Shipyard, letting Cody carry all the heaviest logs and when it came to milking the camel, she claimed (and I quote), "there were testicles, like right behind the udders, there were testicles". Good grief. Where do I even begin? Female camels have udders and produce milk, male camels have testicles and cannot produce milk. It is not possible for a camel to have both male and female organs like udders and testicles. She wasn't even joking, she really is that stupid - I can get past the fact that she hasn't traveled much outside the US and is terrible ignorant, but she is so ridiculously stupid that she cannot even figure out why a milk-producing female camel cannot have testicles and the look on Cody's face was priceless. She couldn't even milk the camel, she just whined and moaned whilst Cody did the milking. Then when they got to Chiang Mai, Cody caught all 20 frogs in the rice field whilst she just whined the entire time. I was really hoping for one of those scorpions to leap onto her face and terrify the hell out of her in the Thai restaurant. She's stupid, she's a bitch and she's useless - oh and she's racist as well, I've talked about some of the nasty things she said on BB on my previous posts. She really has no redeeming features and has got to go down in TAR as one of the most hated contestants ever. Gosh, she is so nasty.
We have to talk about team IndyCar.
Since I have gotten my claws out with Jessica, I'll do the same with team Indycar. They both pretty stupid and uneducated, but wait it gets worse: they really don't care if they come across as totally ignorant and can't stop spouting crap. They seem to say the first thought that pops into their minds without considering that there is a camera capturing every word they say, no matter how stupid and how badly that would come across on TV. I get the feeling that the casting directors put them in the show for a laugh, "look at this pair of idiots, they are Dumb and Dumber personified. They are going to stay stupid shit all the time and it'll be good for a laugh". They probably didn't expect them to do this well in the race, but good grief. The comment about getting malaria from a camel - like, where do I begin? Clearly these two didn't go to Yale, did they even finish high school? Look, Conor Daly is a successful race car driver who's clearly very good at what he does, but it is pretty obvious that his skills which he uses behind the wheel of his car do not involve any intellectual ability that would gain you admission into an Ivy League university. I'd love to see a task that will force them to use their brains and see them totally crumble - oh wait, it seems we will get exactly that in the next leg in Hong Kong!
The Chinese restaurant task in the next leg.
So from the trailer for the next leg, we see a task that was last done on TAR S14 E10 in Beijing. In that task, the racers have to memorize an order delivered in the local language, memorize it and repeat the request to the kitchen so the diners get the right food they want. Back then, it was quite unfair as the task was done in Mandarin, which Victor & Tammy spoke fluently since they were Chinese American whilst the rest of the teams had to struggle with a very difficult foreign language. Well, team Yale are at an advantage as Henry is Chinese, but judging by his surname Zhang, he is probably a Mandarin speaker rather than a Cantonese speaker - the task in the next leg will be done in Cantonese and not Mandarin. These two languages have similarities but are far from mutually intelligible, it is a bit like Italian and Spanish: if you speak one, you'll find the other somewhat more approachable and easier than if you only spoke English. In the trailer, we see team Indycar having a mental breakdown declaring, "this is impossible." Henry would probably not understand some of the words in Cantonese, but if he speaks Mandarin, then he would be able to memorize and regurgitate the order in the kitchen a lot faster than the rest. Like Henry, I speak Mandarin fluently too and know a little Cantonese (well, I can certainly understand a lot more than I can speak). That would probably mean that at least one team would be stuck at the Chinese restaurant for a while, giving team Yale ample time to clear their speed bump in HK.
So who will be eliminated in Hong Kong and who will win TAR S30?
Well, quite frankly, it is anyone's game at this point. Statistically, it looks like team Extreme and team Indycar are stronger than team BB and team Yale. But a lot of it will depend on what kind of tasks await the teams: the only thing we know for sure is that Henry will definitely have an advantage in the Chinese restaurant task, but apart from that, if there is another physically demanding challenge that only one team member can do, then Jessica and Evan could both be in trouble. And if there is a mental challenge, then team BB and team IndyCar could be in trouble. Of course, I dislike team BB but it would be naive to hope that they will be eliminated simply on that basis.Team Indycar have won a total of four legs, that's more than any other team at this stage and even though team Extreme have the best average ranking so far, they have only won two legs. I would love to see team Yale win, but statistically they are the weakest team so far and they have made costly errors such as during the elephant measuring task in Chiang Mai - so I am not holding my breath. As long as team BB do not win, that'll be fine with me, but knowing my luck, I rarely get what I want with TAR, but fingers crossed!
That's it from me for now. Sorry for the delay in getting this to you. Let me know what you think, many thanks for reading.
