Nigeria's Kelechi Iheanacho has made history, becoming the first footballer to be awarded a goal with the VAR in British football; after the referee initially denied him the goal.
It should be noted that Iheanacho scored twice leading Leicester to victory. 2-0
Kelechi Iheanacho’s historic goal helped Leicester City beat Fleetwood Town 2-0 in an FA Cup third-round replay on Tuesday.
Iheanacho scored both goals, the second becoming the first in English football awarded by the Video Assistant Referee system (VAR), as the Foxes overcame the League One side at the King Power Stadium.
After firing Leicester in front just before half-time, Iheanacho’s second goal was initially waved off as he was flagged for offside in taking a pass from Riyad Mahrez, leading to the goal being awarded about 70 seconds after the ball hit the net.
The win earns Leicester a fourth-round trip to Peterborough United later this month.
“We needed to manage the game and put things right from the first match,” manager Claude Puel said.
“I was pleased with the players that came into the team – they played some good moves, quickly, especially second half.”
West Ham had a much harder time than Leicester with a League One side as they were forced to extra time in beating Shrewsbury 1-0.
The extra session was needed after the teams were unable to score for the second straight match.
And just when it looked as though penalty kicks would decide things, Reece Burke broke the deadlock in the 112th minute with his first West Ham goal.
The Hammers next face the winner of Wednesday’s replay between Wigan and Bournemouth.
Also on Tuesday, Jon Dadi Bodvarsson scored a hat-trick as Reading beat Stevenage 3-0 to set up a tie with Sheffield Wednesday, who defeated Carlisle United 2-0.
Junior Hoilett scored twice as Cardiff City eased past Mansfield Town 4-1 to earn a meeting with Premier League leaders Manchester City.
In Wednesday’s other replays, Chelsea host Norwich City and Wolverhampton Wanderers visit Swansea City.
