news-today.world | (CAMBRIDGE, Md.) — Maryland State Police arrested a man on Monday who is suspected of firing at Cambridge Police Department officers this past December.
The suspect, William Manokey, 46, of Cambridge, is charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder, two counts of second-degree attempted murder, two counts of first-degree assault, two counts of second-degree assault on a law enforcement officer, concealment of a dangerous weapon, possession of a dangerous weapon with intent to injure, possession of a handgun and the use of a firearm in a felony violent crime. He is being held without bond at the Dorchester County Detention Center.
Shortly after 11:30 p.m. on Dec. 18, 2017, two officers from the Cambridge Police Department were conducting a crime reduction patrol in an area of the city where thefts from vehicles had been occurring. According to the preliminary investigation, the officers were traveling in the area of Race Street and Goldsborough Avenue, when they observed the suspect walking along the street. As they drove toward him, the man was seen reaching into his waistband. Before the officers could stop their vehicle, the suspect withdrew a large caliber handgun and is believed to have fired once at the officers.
One of the Cambridge Police Department officers got out of the vehicle and fired what is believed to be once at the suspect, who ran away. The officer ran after the suspect, but did not capture him.
The Cambridge Police Department requested the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit investigate the police-involved shooting and investigators responded to do so. State Police Forensic Sciences Division crime scene technicians conducted a search and processed the extensive scene for evidence. Investigators recovered a handgun and other items believed to have been discarded by the suspect as he fled.
As a result of further investigation, troopers obtained and served an arrest warrant on Manokey. He was taken into custody without incident. The investigation is continuing.
