I used to live in Salisbury, I had to move due to lack of work. Last week I was back in Salisbury taking care of some odds and ends and I couldn’t help but notice all the orange SVN signs all over the place. At one intersection, I counted six properties with huge signs within view.
I used to live in Salisbury, I had to move due to lack of work. Last week I was back in Salisbury taking care of some odds and ends and I couldn’t help but notice all the orange SVN signs all over the place. At one intersection, I counted six properties with huge signs within view.
My background is in real estate/leasing and construction; so I certainly understand the need to advertise and fill vacancies. If a person is at least somewhat familiar with Salisbury, they know there are a ton of empty warehouse and office space available. And if you are familiar with Salisbury you know there is only a couple of commercial real estate firms in the area. If you need something you know where to go. If a company is exploring a new area to expand their operations, most of the time they will look up Towns and listings on the internet, contact a local rep and ask them to make suggestions on their needs before visiting. Personally I think the signs are useless and an eyesore.
To conclude where I am going with this: I believe the excessive leasing and sale signs throughout Salisbury is doing the town a disservice. Anyone living in the town is constantly being reminded of the decline and anyone visiting the town is left saying to themselves ‘the economy is terrible here’. Worst of all, year after year, the signs are in the same locations; nothing changes.
I loved Salisbury and hope to return the Eastern Shore one day, and I want Salisbury to do well and succeed. Just my thoughts, and I was curious if anyone else that reads your blog feels the same. It’s the little things that change a person’s perception of an area.
